Jessica MacDonaldJessica MacDonald graduated from Cornell’s school of Industrial and Labor Relations and pursued work with student career development and healthcare process improvement and EMR’s before returning to Cornell in her current role as the Sloan Program Manager. In her role Jessica supports the day to day operations of the Sloan Program, serves on the admissions committee, and supports students in their professional development. Jessica is a Gallup Certified Strengths Coach who uses a strengths based approach to professional development. Jessica has proudly supported the WIHL organization for the last 5 years providing support and assistance on event planning, alumni engagement, and financial sourcing.

Julie H. Carmalt, PhD
Associate Director, Sloan Program in Health Administration (MHA degree)
Senior Lecturer, Department of Policy Analysis and Management
Julie Carmalt is a health demographer by training with primary research and teaching interests in population health, population health management, public health policy, and health equity. She currently serves as Associate Director of the Sloan Program in Health Administration where she guides the admissions committee in holistic, equitable, and inclusive recruitment practices; leads student professional development programs; and mindfully advises students to support their success and wellbeing. As Senior Lecturer of population health, Carmalt teaches undergraduate and graduate population health management courses grounded in health equity, prevention, social determinants of health, and data-driven care management solutions. Prior to her career in academia, Carmalt served in various state and local government roles in juvenile justice case management and therapeutic program development, and even worked as a professional river guide to facilitate outdoor recreation access for persons with disabilities. Carmalt’s guiding principles which she hopes to imbue to students include “upstream” prevention, equity, inclusion, antiracism, social justice, advocacy, mindfulness, and seeking joy.

Cathy BartellCathy Gordon Bartell received her AAS from the State University of New York, Upstate Medical Center and her BHS from the University of Missouri, where she studied Respiratory Therapy. She was a therapist at Albany Medical Center, where she became interested in the healthcare industry. She applied all of this energy to the Cornell University, Sloan Program in Health Administration, from which she graduated in 1990, and later completed the Residency/Fellowship at Guthrie Healthcare. During her 30-year career in the Greater Hartford, CT area, she worked for both the payor and provider side. In her first 10 years, she helped build a start-up HMO known as MedSpan and also worked for a boutique consulting firm Prescott Associates. Later, she was a member of MGMA and managed large practices including anesthesia, cardiology and multi-specialty groups. Before entering academia again, she served for two years as CEO/Administrator of Connecticut Surgery Center, a member of SCA. In 2020, Cathy returned to the Sloan Program as Associate Director, where she focuses upon student placement, networking, corporate affairs, alumni relations and being a person who loves Ithaca. Cathy’s husband Thomas is a former Naval Officer and is VP and Deputy General Counsel of The Hartford Financial Services Group. Their daughter Whitney is a graduate of Cornell University and American University and is an educator in Washington DC. Her youngest Eva is a freshman at Lehigh University.
